The Dead Zone Episode Guide
Season 1, 2, 3,
4, 5
Season 1
1. Wheel of Fortune (Original airdate June 16, 2002)
Johnny Smith was leading an idyllic small-town life: working as a high school
science teacher, engaged to the love of his life, Sarah, and being a devoted son
to his widowed mother, Vera, who lives nearby. But after a near-fatal car
accident puts him in a deep coma, Johnny awakens six years later to find
everything has changed: Sarah is now is married to someone else, local sheriff
Walt Bannerman; the child they are raising is actually Johnny's son and knows
nothing about his real father; and Johnny's mother Vera has passed away, leaving
Johnny's finances under the thumb of Reverend Purdy, an influential religious
leader who is also his mother's former lover. But, most importantly, Johnny
himself has changed: he now finds himself with the gift (or curse) of second
sight. Through visions he sees with a simple touch, he becomes responsible for
saving a nurse's little girl from a fire, helping his Vietnamese doctor reunite
with the mother he thought was killed during the fall of Saigon, and now must
prevent a local serial killer from striking again. Now Johnny is faced with the
daunting task of coming to grips with his new powers - and navigating his way
through his new life.
2. What It Seems (Original airdate June 23, 2002)
Johnny, certain that nurse Allison will be the Bangor Strangler's next victim,
enlists the help of his physical therapist and new friend Bruce to try and stop
the murder. He also clashes with Penobscot County Sheriff Walt Bannerman, who is
uncomfortable with Johnny's sudden appearance in his life. Nevertheless, Walt
pays Johnny's powers some heed by letting him touch a piece of evidence. Johnny
has a vision in which he enters the mind of the serial killer and, to his
horror, learns what it feels like to kill. Allison eventually turns up very much
alive, having been out of town for a couple of days, and Johnny becomes a
laughing stock. However, Bruce, in his infinite Zen wisdom, helps Johnny see
what really happened: Allison actually managed to elude the killer - but the
killer eventually chose another victim.
3. Quality of Life (Original airdate June 30, 2002)
The story is about Johnny's attempt to return to teaching, and Todd is one of
his students, a hockey player. Johnny has an incredible vision that suggests the
player might have a serious heart condition but there's no medical evidence to
support him. So, in one sense, it's a story of Johnny's powers versus modern
medicine. In another, it's about Johnny's hope of reclaiming some part of the
life he lost before the accident that sent him into a coma.
4. Enigma (Original airdate July 7, 2002)
Johnny takes the lovely Chandra out on a date, but after he has a vision of

patients, Arthur, find his long lost love, Abby. Arthur first fell in love with
Abby at the Stage Door Canteen before going off to fight in World War II, but
when he returned from the war, she had vanished. Arthur is sure he spotted Abby
recently in New York, so Johnny travels to The Big Apple to search for her.
Johnny becomes increasingly enchanted by Abby in the visions he has of her as a
young woman. He sees her through the eyes of Tommy, an old buddy of Arthur's who
had a secret affair with Abby. It turns out their affair produced a child, which

Abby.

visions.

Johnny moves into his new house and starts having visions of a tub filled with

in a cover-up concerning the death of Johnny's mother.
7. Enemy Mind (Original airdate July 28, 2002)
While helping to track down a runaway, Jill, who is involved with drugs, Johnny

supplier.
8. Netherworld (Original airdate August 4, 2002)
The line between fantasy and reality blurs for Johnny when he awakens to find

and images of fire trucks and fires.

photographer and jealous lover.
12. Shaman (Original airdate September 8, 2002)
While traveling out in the wilderness with Bruce, Johnny is plagued by visions
of a meteor hitting a mountain and people vanishing. He's unable to direct an

14. Valley of the Shadow (Original airdate January 5, 2003)
The season premiere finds Johnny still shaken by his Armageddon visions and
growing increasingly obsessed with Stillson, whom he's secretly following to try
and gain further visions. But his powers seem to be on the blink, which is poor
timing when a CEO's son is stolen by a mysterious kidnapper who seems fascinated
by Johnny and taunts him with a series of biblical clues. Johnny eventually
tracks the missing boy and the kidnapper, Ritter - the owner of a small company
that the CEO bought out. Ritter tells Johnny that Smith is Daniel the prophet
and he has to save the world by helping it to save itself, before killing
himself in a police gunfight. Meanwhile, Stilson takes a sexual interest in
Sarah Bannerman.

to get visions not only of the teens but of the miners who died in an incident
in 1949 brought on by his grandfather's actions. The ghost miners seem to be
striking back at Johnny and Walt is seriously injured. The teens are rescued but
Johnny gets a vision of Walt's funeral as he is taken away in the ambulance. (To
be continued)
16. Ascent (2) (Original airdate January 19, 2003)
Continuing from the previous episode, Walt is in a coma from his injuries and
Johnny tries to get inside his head. He discovers that Walt's greatest regret is
his belief that Sarah and Johnny are meant for each other and he's merely a
third-wheel. One of Walt's visions, of his father, proves to have a life of his
own and claims that Walt won't escape him as Johnny did. Johnny's link is
killing him as well, and as the two men spiral downwards Johnny tells Walt of
his brief fling with Sarah (in "Destiny"). This spurs Walt to fight back and
bring them both out of their coma...although Walt remembers nothing of what
Johnny told him.

what is responsible for the deaths of thousands of newborns. Johnny gets Dana to
print the story, but all it does is further ensure the future. He and Dana work
with Thomas to get him set up with a former classmate of his named Claire who
will later become his wife. Together the two will have a child that will be born
with birth defects as a result of her using revivatin, which is what will
motivate him to investigate the cream. Everything seems to go smoothly until
Claire sees Johnny and figures out what is going on and runs out on her date
with Thomas. Later Thomas comes clean to Claire about his actions and the

through visions as a result of the transfusion that he received. Dr. Gibson
tells him that this will only be temporary and that it should go away in about a
month when their blood filters out of his system. Johnny attempts to return to
his life, but being part of the lives of the donors proves to be both
