The Powers of Mathew Star Episode Guide

 

Season 1


1. Jackal (Original airdate September 17,1982)
The Air Force alerts General Tucker when they track a UFO near Crestridge, California, where two alien assassins have arrived on Earth. Elsewhere, a teenage boy can't sleep and ends up having a conversation with his guardian, and explains that he is tired of being on the run. But as Walter Shephard points out, the only alternative is death, as alienagents- members of a race that conquered their home world- are constantly being sent to kill the Prince- Matthew Starr- who is next in line to rule his world. Walt's job is to protect the prince until his powers become powerful enough that they can return and try to save Quadris. In the meantime, Matt starts at Crestridge High School as a new student, while Walt begins his job as a science teacher. Once there, Matthew meets beautiful Pam Elliot, a fellow student who hits it off with the prince. Matthew also meets Cindy During, not realizing that she is one of the two assassins sent to kill him. Meanwhile, Walt has his share of problems when General Tucker catches him in the school parking lot and tells the teacher he knows who he is, and where he's from.

2. The Accused (Original airdate September 24, 1982)
Walt leaves Matt for a couple of hours to go shopping, a time he cannot account for, which results in his being arrested for murder. It seems that a dope pusher, who could be Walt's twin brother, murdered an undercover cop who was trying to arrest him. The next day at school two detectives arrive to talk to Walt, who is arrested, when he cannot prove where he was when the officer was killed. Once in court, Walt's attorney believes he can get him cleared of the charges, until the police show a videotape of Walt's look-alike shooting the cop. Walt's only hope now seems to be with Matthew

3. Daredevil (Original airdate October 1, 1982)
Pam has gotten a small part in a low budget horror movie that is being filmed at Crestridge High School, while Matthew's friend Peter, whom Matt knew when he lived in Connecticut is working as a gopher on the set. Pete has bigger plans: he wants to be a professional stuntman. Matthew takes Pete home. Once home, Matt and Walt's past is partly revealed to Pam when Pete mentions that Walt used to have a different name. While Pete stays in their home Walt is concerned over the possibility of more of their past being found out. Meanwhile Matt's special powers provide a helping hand to Pete when his first job as a stuntman isn't going too well. Unfortunately, Matt's good intentions backfire When Pete takes bigger and bigger chances, thinking that he can pull off any stunt

4. Genius (Original airdate October 8, 1982)
It's science fair project time at Crestridge High School, and while Matthew is busy saving one project that has run amuck, a teenage girl has invented something more practical: a revolutionary new house paint that has, unfortunately nullified Matt's powers. Walt tries to find out what is in the paint, but the girl won't say. Away from the paint Matt's powers return but Walt fears that if Matt spends an extended amount of time near the paint, he will lose his powers permanently.

5. Predictions (Original airdate October 22, 1982)
A new girl in school, Becky Vance goes along for a ride in an illegal road race and is nearly killed when the car crashes. Nearby is her friend, Matthew, who, while under the stress of the moment discovers he has a new power: he can read people's minds in a moment of crisis. Later that night, Matthew attends a party with Pam, and the recovering Becky also shows up. At the party, Becky could suddenly see in the future and Matthew see's this via Becky's mind.

6. The Italian Caper (Original airdate October 29, 1982)
In Italy, a convoy carrying the new top-secret AGD weapon is attacked by terrorists, who make off with the piece of military hardware. General Tucker contacts Walt, and wants he and Matthew to drop everything, fly to Italy and find the device (a move that could be difficult since they are in the middle of the school year). The next day, the school principle announces that Matthew has been nominated to attend and international science fair conference in Italy. Just out of coincidence, Walt is chosen to be a judge at the same science fair. The two smell a rat, and soon are whisked off to Rome. Once there, General Tucker is kidnapped.

7. Winning (Original airdate November 5, 1982)
Tony Garcia, a poor Chicano kid with a chip on his shoulder becomes the star quarterback of the high school football team. He has plenty of moves on and off the field, which Matthew notices when the kid puts the moves on Pam. Meanwhile, Matthew desperately wants to join the team but Walt is afraid he will get hurt and his identity revealed once in the hospital for his internal organs are different than a human's. Walt finally agrees to let Matt join, but the prince must compete with Garcia for the position of quarterback.

8. Survival (Original airdate November 12, 1982)
A school survival class consisting of Matthew, Pam, some other students, along with class instructor's Walt and Coach Curtis go onto a mountain to build emergency shelters for hikers because another classmate had died from the elements the previous year on a hike in the same location. As they stop to camp and rest, a park ranger arrives, and tells them to keep an eye over their shoulders. It seems a few months back two mental patients escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane, the ranger tells them that the patients must be long gone, he does warn the group that it is also possible that they are still in these mountains.

9. Triangle (Original airdate November 19, 1982)
Pam's uncle Ron, a big-time treasure hunter, believes he has found a long-lost treasure but his plane goes out of control and crashes on an island within the Bermuda Triangle. Several thousands of miles away, Walt is very upset at Matthew as he is planning to give Pam a necklace of great religious significance that belonged to his mother. Walt does not believe that the prince appreciates the value of his alien culture. Matthew only wants to give Pam something special, which he does later that night at Pam's birthday party. While at the party, Pam and her mother learn that uncle Ron's plane has disappeared, making Pam very upset. The next day Pam tells Matt that she is flying to Florida to find her uncle, since no one else seems to care. Realizing how important her uncle means to her, Matthew joins her on the plane before it is leaving. Once in Miami, they are nearly out of money and are taken in by a disreputable pilot who has the nose for the legendary treasure.

10. Mother (Original airdate November 26, 1982)
Pam and Matthew go to a carnival where Matt uses his powers to win a girl a teddy bear after she was cheated out of her money by the operator of a crooked game. The two teenagers decide to get their fortunes told, and Matthew (who is alone with an old woman) is amazed that she seems to know so much about his true background. Before he leaves, the old woman gives Matt a ring, which he gives to Pam as a present. The next day Walt sees her wearing it at school, and asks Pam where she got it, so she explains. Later, Matthew is dumbfounded to learn that the ring belonged to his mother!

11. Experiments (Original airdate December 10,1982)
Matthew now has new power, that of reading the minds of other species. He discovers this power when a dolphin in a marine amusement park summons his help, as the animal is being subjected to tests with a new drug that speeds up the function of the brain to fifty times its normal function. The company perfecting this dangerous drug, Eastman Las, is taking shortcuts to get the drug onto the market quicker; meanwhile the scientist in charge keeps warning his boss that the drug may cause brain "burn-out" in humans. Matt breaks into the lab without Walt's consent to find out what is happening. In the lab, Matt is caught trespassing, and he is not only in trouble with the company owner, but with Walt also.

12. The Fugitive (Original airdate December 17, 1982)
Matthew meets with Pam, who is working at the local hospital for Dr. Lindsay. Matt makes a date with the candy-striper, then leads home, where Walt is very upset that Matthew allowed himself to be photographed by a thermo magnetic scanner that Dr. Lindsay is setting up for use in the hospital. Not realizing it, Matt has allowed the hospital to make a sketch of everything inside his alien body (including two hearts and 15 ribs). To avoid having their secret revealed, Walt heads to the hospital to erase the computer data on Matt, but while doing so he comes into contact with an Earth bacteria and had a deadly reaction to it. This reaction causes Walt to faint in school the next day and is rushed to the hospital.

13. Matthew Star, D.O.A (Original airdate January 21, 1983)
Just as Matthew is about to ask out a beautiful new student, his communication-ring flashes, sending him and Walt to meet Major Wymore (their new contact who replaced Tucker). When they get together, Wymore admits that he has no use for Matt, Walt, or their special powers, but has been ordered to co-operate with them. With this out of the way, Wymore tells them that they are needed to investigate a series of underworld murders.

14. The Racer's Edge (Original airdate January 28, 1983)
A kidnapper murders a new mechanic for Caroline Ashley, a motorcycle rider in town for a big race. The kidnapper is also a terrorist, and takes the mechanic's place to get the girl. Meanwhile, Matthew's flashing ring puts him and Walt in contact with Wymore, who wants them to keep an eye out for Caroline, as she is the daughter of an important politician involved in top secret negotiations. Capture of her by an international terrorist could have far reaching implications, so Matt and Walt are asked to go undercover at the race to protect the young lady.

15. Dead Man's Hand (Original airdate February 11, 1983)
After an agent disguised as a waiter is killed in a casino, Matthew's communication-ring flashes, the signal that he and Walt are wanted by Wymore for another assignment. Meeting Wymore, they are instructed to put an end to the activities of Frank Veech, a criminal involved in gambling, prostitution, cocaine, extortion, and pornography, in a half dozen cities. The man has been allowed to operate without fear of reprisals after he allows important politicians to gamble in his casinos to then lose huge amounts of money and are then being kept under extortion measures to keep them under his hand for what they owe. Now Wymore wants Matt and Walt to succeed in ending this where the Attorney General's best agents have failed.

16. 36 Hours (Original airdate February 18, 1983)
Several men manage to get into the Space Center and use gas to knock out the crew preparing to guide a space shuttle mission back to Earth. The men steal the ALM (Automatic Landing Mode, the electronic device that automatically flies the shuttle through the atmosphere), the shuttle cannot land, giving the astronauts only 36 hours to live before the spaceship burns up in the atmosphere. Walt and Matt are contacted by Wymore in an almost deserted theatre, where the agent describes the situation. To find the device, Walt masquerades as an Air Force Col. and Matt goes undercover as a drifter.

17. The Quadrain Caper (Original airdate February 25, 1983)
A violent ex-con, Deke Griffin, is picked up by his dead partner's daughter as he is released from prison. The two plan a theft of 10 million dollars. Meanwhile, Matt is on the make with his new girlfriend, but is interrupted by a flash of his communication-ring. He and Walt fly to San Francisco to meet with Wymore, who is very upset, and has to admit that this case is personal in nature. Matt and Walt want no part in this and start to leave, but are stopped by Wymore's nephew. He claims that he borrowed an expensive diamond necklace from a customer at the bank he works for, and used it to obtain a loan to save a near bankrupt animal shelter. Before Wymore's nephew could return the necklace to the customer's safe deposit box, the woman died. Now if he returned it, her lawyers would believe he stole it. The only alternative for Wymore's nephew is for Matt and Walt to return the necklace to the safe deposit box after banking hours. When attempting to do this, Matthew and Walt meet up with the thieves and get messed up with their plans.

18. Brain Drain (Original airdate March 4, 1983)
As Matthew is busy cheating Walt at cards by using his powers (which he denies), his communication-ring flashes, bringing them in contact again with Wymore. Wymore explains to the both of them that the country's most important asset is being drained: The US is being drained of brilliant people. Many of these great thinkers are disappearing and then turning up in foreign countries as defectors. A Middle-East sheik named Omar has arrived in the country, possibly to take possession of some of the missing men. Walt and Matt are sent to Washington, D.C to find who is holding these brilliant men. Once in D.C, they talk to a daughter of one of the missing men and learn that he had joined a dating service, "Heart's Desire", which becomes the link to all those who had disappeared. Going undercover, this causes Matt and Walt the risk of losing their lives.

19. The Great Waldo Shepherd (Original airdate March 11, 1983)
A plane containing top secret NATO plans of a new fighter aircraft is stolen at an air show. Matt and Walt are informed of the situation and fly there to obtain jobs at the show. Walt acts as a pilot and Matthew as a very reluctant wing walker. Matt meets a girl with a hostile boyfriend named Lou Daggot. Lou has a couple of run-in's with Matthew, but the prince, himself puts him in his place. After the last confrontation, Matt tells Walt about the situation. Walt believes that the girl and Daggot may somehow be tied in with the theft. Before they can investigate any further, the two have to put on a performance for the show (with a plane that had been tampered with and may kill them both.

20. Road Rebels (Original airdate March 25, 1983)
Young punks are stealing high-tech laser crystals in California's silicon valley and are selling the secrets to foreign agents, allowing them to steal our technology. Wymore contacts Matt and tells him Walt has already been sent ahead to look into the case. Wymore also tells Matt that he should proceed to a location the same hoodlums use to race their hot-rod cars. Matthew arrives in his own hot car, and moments later the police arrive (Walt and a woman officer). Walt makes it appear that Matt is a cop-hating ex-con (just the type to join and infiltrate their gang, and hopefully find the stolen crystals.

21. Swords and Quests (Original airdate April 8, 1983)
Walt is less than excited over Matthew's desire to join his friends in a swords and sorcery game. Walt finally agrees to allow Matt to play in the game that is sponsored by a toy company, but is actually a cover for criminal activity. Matthew wants to know more about the game before they start, but his friends assure him to just go with whatever happens. They start playing the deadly fantasy game and Matt begins to feel ill. Matt continues because he would feel worse if he had to let his friends down by quitting the game, or to find that the true intention is to steal top-secret information from player Mandy Tucker's scientist father. Meanwhile Walt desperately searches for Matt, who has come down with a life threatening sickness that may kill him if left untreated.

22. Starr Knight* (Original airdate April 15, 1983).
David Starr finds himself in a fog-shrouded area facing a horrible beast. He drops his weapon and runs. This was a nightmare and David awakes screaming in his bed. He walks into the kitchen to have breakfast and his guardian, Max (a janitor at Crestridge High School) and tells him about his nightmare. Max is also an alien from the planet Quadris and always wears one glove to cover an all mechanical hand. David leaves for school on a bus with his girlfriend, Pam. On the way, the breaks fail in the vehicle, and only the use of David's special powers stop the bus from going over a cliff before all the passengers can get out. After the incident, David cannot remember what happened but feels drained. As another typical day goes by at school, David is harassed for not having real parents, and for living with a lowly janitor which causes him to get into a fist fight with another student. As David continues to try to cope with his life, he goes to dinner at Pam's house. Suddenly David realizes he can read the mind's of Pam's parents. This revelation causes David to run from their home. David does not yet know why he has these powers or that he is an alien prince of the planet called, Quadris.

*Note: This episode was the pilot and was done before Louis Gossett became Matthew's guardian and also Matthew Star was named David Starr. This episode was not shown as the first episode but was seen as the last episode.
